Terms of Use
The agreement between you and Portable Lawyer, written to be read.
Last updated: 27 September 2026
A note on this document. These terms are a plain-language draft written by the people who built the product. They have not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, and details that only the operating company can supply appear as [PLACEHOLDERS — TO BE SUPPLIED] rather than guesses. We would rather show you the gaps than invent a registration number.
Accepting these terms
By using Portable Lawyer you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site. If you use the site on behalf of an organisation, you are confirming that you may accept these terms for it.
What the service is
Portable Lawyer publishes the text of national constitutions and provides tools to search it, read individual provisions, and ask questions about it. It is an information service. It is not a law firm, it does not practise law anywhere, and it does not give legal advice. Please read the disclaimer, which is part of these terms.
The law is free — and never sold
The constitutional text on this site is free. We do not charge for access to it, we do not paywall it, and we do not require an account to read it. That will not change. You may read, quote, cite, link to, and redistribute the text of the law we publish, and you do not need our permission to do so. If we ever offer paid features, they will be for extra convenience and tooling, never for the text itself.
You are welcome to link to any provision, embed the machine-readable index, or point an AI assistant at it. The permanent address for a passage is /provision/<id>, and each one states how to cite it.
Your account
- You need an account only for the AI conversation features; everything else is open.
- Give accurate details, and keep your password to yourself.
- You are responsible for what happens through your account.
- Do not share an account, and do not create accounts automatically or in bulk — the registration endpoint is rate-limited precisely because that is abuse.
- You can ask us to close your account at any time (see the privacy policy for how, and for the current limits of self-service deletion).
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the service to break the law, to infringe anyone's rights, or to harass anyone;
- present output from this site as advice from a qualified lawyer, or as advice from us;
- attempt to get around authentication, rate limits, or any other technical control, or probe the service for vulnerabilities instead of reporting them to us;
- upload a document you have no right to share, or that contains other people's confidential information;
- send automated traffic that degrades the service for other people. Reading and crawling the public corpus is welcome and deliberately permitted; hammering the OpenAI-backed features is not.
If your use threatens the service or other users, we may limit or suspend it, and we will try to tell you why.
AI output is not legal advice
Answers and document reviews generated by AI are not legal advice, are not a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction, and can be wrong, incomplete, or out of date. Every AI answer here is meant to be checked against the passage it cites, and each citation links to that passage so you can check it. You are responsible for the decisions you take; if a decision matters, take it with a lawyer.
If you are in immediate danger or facing arrest, contact the emergency services and a lawyer in your country rather than relying on this site.
What you send us
You keep whatever rights you have in the questions you ask and the documents you upload. By using the AI features you give us permission to process that content for the sole purpose of operating the service for you: storing your conversation, retrieving relevant constitutional passages, and sending the text to our AI provider to produce an answer or review. The privacy policy sets out exactly what is sent, to whom, and what is kept.
Do not upload anything you are not entitled to share. The document review feature is not a secure document vault and is not suitable for material you must keep confidential.
What belongs to us
We claim no copyright over the text of the law itself; the constitutions we publish are public documents. The rest of the site — our presentation of the corpus, the plain-language explanations, the site's design, and its source code — is ours or is used with permission, and the Portable Lawyer name and logo belong to Nth Collective Limited. If you believe something on this site infringes your rights, write to [CONTACT EMAIL — TO BE SUPPLIED] and we will look at it promptly.
Availability and changes
The service is provided as it is, when it is up. We do not promise that it will be available, uninterrupted, secure, or free of errors, or that the corpus is complete. We may add, change, suspend or remove features, and we may correct or remove content. The constitutional text will remain free, as stated above, but the surrounding features may change.
Limits of our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of this site or from your reliance on anything on it — including answers generated by AI, document reviews, and any error or omission in the transcribed text of a constitution. This is exactly why every passage shows its source and why the disclaimer tells you to verify anything that matters against the official gazette.
Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law that applies to you.
Suspension and termination
You may stop using the service at any time, and you may ask us to close your account. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we discontinue the service. Where we can, we will give you notice and a chance to retrieve what is yours.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of [GOVERNING LAW — TO BE SUPPLIED], and disputes are to be brought in the courts of [JURISDICTION OF THE COURTS — TO BE SUPPLIED]. Before either of us starts a formal dispute, please write to [CONTACT EMAIL — TO BE SUPPLIED] — most problems here will be a correction we are glad to make.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service changes; the date at the top shows when they last changed. If a change is material, we will make it visible rather than slipping it in. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
